Gutters kill roofs

Roof panels die along their edges: drip rails and gutter seams trap water against spot-welded flanges, and once the seam lifts, corrosion runs the length of the panel invisibly. Dents from roof racks and low branches finish the job. Because a roof is the largest, flattest panel on the vehicle, repairs show — replacement is usually the better result.

Two-person work

Roof skins are large and springy: always fit with two people, drill gutter spot welds cleanly, clamp and re-check the door and windscreen apertures before welding, and weld in short alternating bursts to keep heat out of the crown. Reseal gutters thoroughly — they're why the original failed.

Are Defender roofs alloy?

Yes, matching the factory panel; stiffeners and fixing structure are as original. FJ40/FJ45 roofs are steel like the originals.

Will a 90 roof fit a 110?

No — wheelbase-specific lengths. Pick-up and wagon roofs also differ; listings state fitment.
